How to Use Google Ask Advisor Without Letting AI Make Your Marketing Decisions
Updated: September 2026
Google’s Ask Advisor is turning Google Ads and Google Analytics into conversational marketing tools. Marketers can increasingly ask questions about performance, generate visual reports, investigate changes and receive AI-powered recommendations without manually navigating every report.
That can eliminate a lot of routine analysis. It can also make weak conclusions faster if marketers stop checking the evidence.
The right way to use Ask Advisor is as an analytical accelerator, not an autonomous marketing strategist.
What Google Ask Advisor does
Ask Advisor uses Google’s Gemini models across its marketing products. In Google Analytics, it can answer questions about a property, create visualizations, diagnose performance changes and point users toward relevant reports. Google has also added AI-generated homepage summaries and benchmarking capabilities.
In Google Ads, Google is similarly surfacing AI-powered insights and conversational reporting.
This moves the interface away from “find the right report” and toward “ask the right question.”
The questions marketers should ask first
Start with questions that force the AI to identify evidence rather than immediately prescribe changes.
What changed?
Ask for the largest statistically or commercially meaningful movements in traffic, conversions, revenue, CPA or ROAS.
Where did the change happen?
Break the movement down by channel, campaign, landing page, device, geography or another relevant dimension.
What evidence could explain it?
Ask Advisor can help identify correlated changes, but treat these as explanations to investigate rather than proven causes.
What should I inspect manually?
Have the AI point you to reports, configurations or segments that can verify the conclusion.
Where AI analysis becomes dangerous
Marketing data contains ambiguity that a clean AI-generated answer can hide.
Attribution models assign credit differently. Conversion windows change which interactions receive credit. Platform conversions may not match GA4. A campaign can generate cheaper leads while sales quality declines.
Before accepting an AI recommendation, ask whether the underlying metric represents the actual business outcome.

A five-step Ask Advisor workflow
- Define the business question. Start with the decision you need to make, not a vague request for optimization.
- Ask for the relevant evidence. Identify which metrics and segments changed.
- Ask for competing explanations. Do not let the assistant settle on the first plausible story.
- Verify the data. Check important conclusions against the underlying reports and conversion setup.
- Turn the conclusion into a test. When possible, validate recommendations experimentally rather than changing multiple variables at once.
Use AI to shorten analysis, not the evidence cycle
AI can summarize a month of campaign data in seconds. It cannot make a one-day test statistically mature in seconds.
This distinction will become increasingly important as marketing agents gain the ability to take actions. Operational speed and evidentiary speed are not the same thing.
An agent may be able to create a campaign, adjust a budget or draft a report instantly. You still need enough observations to know whether the change worked.
What this means for marketing teams
Routine reporting work will continue to shrink. Teams should use the recovered time to improve the work AI struggles with: measurement design, customer understanding, experimentation, financial modeling and strategic prioritization.
The advantage will not come from asking an AI assistant to “optimize my account.” Anyone can do that.
The advantage will come from knowing what to ask, what evidence to demand and when not to trust the answer.
