Smart Campaign to PMax: Validate Before You Convert

Google Ads Smart campaign moving through validation checkpoints into a Performance Max draft

Updated: October 2026

Converting a Smart campaign to Performance Max should begin with validation, not publication. Google Ads API v25.2 can generate a paused, incomplete PMax draft and return conversion warnings before creation. Use that checkpoint to audit goals, budget, URLs, assets, and measurement rather than carrying every Smart-campaign weakness into broader automation.

What the new workflow changes

The new GeneratePMaxDraftCampaign service can initialize a Performance Max campaign from an existing Smart campaign. A validate-only option returns warnings and conversion issues without creating the draft. When a draft is created, Google returns resource names for the campaign, budget, asset group, and assets.

This is a migration aid, not a strategic approval. Some settings are unsupported, the generated campaign starts paused, and PMax can serve across more inventory than the source campaign.

Run a source-campaign audit first

  • Confirm the primary conversion represents revenue or qualified demand.
  • Remove duplicate, obsolete, or page-view conversions from campaign goals.
  • Check location options, languages, schedules, and business information.
  • Review search terms and landing pages for unwanted intent.
  • Document current spend, leads or sales, value, CPA or ROAS, and lead quality.
  • Inventory creative rights, dates, product claims, and required disclaimers.

Use validate-only as a release gate

Store the validation response with the migration ticket. Classify each message as blocking, accepted with explanation, or requiring a manual rebuild. Do not let an integration automatically publish because an API call succeeded.

Check Question Release rule
Goals Is bidding tied to the correct outcome? Block on shallow or duplicate goals
Budget Can cross-channel delivery spend safely? Start inside a defined ceiling
URLs Are destinations relevant and measurable? Exclude weak paths before launch
Assets Are copy, images, and logos approved? No expired claims or rights gaps
Feed Are products and business data current? Resolve disapprovals and mismatches

Rebuild what should not be inherited

A Smart campaign may have been designed around simplified controls. Use migration to improve the system: separate business goals, add asset groups that reflect real offers, establish brand and URL exclusions, attach audience signals where helpful, and create reporting labels that survive future edits.

Do not copy the old budget blindly. PMax can find more inventory, so a daily limit that was safe in Smart campaigns may produce a different pacing pattern.

A controlled launch plan

  1. Generate and review the paused draft.
  2. Resolve validation warnings and unsupported settings.
  3. Test every final URL, form, call route, and purchase event.
  4. Capture screenshots and a configuration export.
  5. Launch at a bounded budget without simultaneous offer changes.
  6. Monitor spend, placement mix, search-term insights, conversion lag, and CRM quality.
  7. Keep the source campaign available for rollback until the new system proves stable.

Use the MTC Performance Max exclusions guide and Performance Planner preflight checklist before approving the launch.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google publish the generated PMax campaign automatically?

No. The API documentation says the generated campaign is paused and incomplete.

Can validation replace manual QA?

No. Validation catches supported configuration issues; it cannot judge offer quality, business economics, or customer experience.

Should the Smart campaign be paused immediately?

Not until the PMax launch and measurement plan are ready. Define overlap and rollback rules before changing live delivery.
