The Order Looks Right Until the Customer Finds the Mistake After Payment.

Updated: October 22, 2026
A checkout order-review step should show the exact items, quantities, price, shipping address, delivery method and key terms—and let customers correct each part without starting over. The goal is not another page. It is a final error-prevention checkpoint that preserves momentum.
Why review belongs before payment
Customers can miss an autofill mistake, tap the wrong product variant or accept a default shipping method. Discovering that after payment creates cancellations, support work and distrust. A concise review state lets the buyer confirm the commitment while intent is still high.
The review should not duplicate the entire checkout form. It should summarize the decision, expose the information most likely to create fulfillment problems and place a clear edit action beside each section.
Show what can change the order
| Section | Display | Edit behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Items | Product, variant, quantity | Return to the cart with state preserved |
| Delivery | Address, method, arrival estimate | Edit in place or return to shipping |
| Price | Subtotal, discounts, tax, shipping, total | Explain recalculation before confirmation |
| Payment | Masked method and billing summary | Replace securely without exposing data |
| Terms | Renewal, cancellation or final-sale conditions | Link to concise details |
Preserve progress during every edit
An edit action should reopen the smallest relevant section, retain valid fields and return the customer to the review point. Do not erase a shipping address because the quantity changed. Do not send the buyer to the cart homepage when only the apartment number needs correction.
- Store the checkout state against a secure session.
- Use a visible Edit link for each review section.
- Focus the first editable field after navigation.
- Recalculate totals immediately after a change.
- Announce meaningful price changes accessibly.
- Return the customer to the same review context.
- Require a fresh confirmation only when necessary.
Make the total impossible to misread
Place the final total near the payment action and explain any recurring charge, authorization hold or estimated tax. If an edit changes delivery cost or promotion eligibility, show the previous and current outcome in plain language. Surprise is more damaging than a slightly longer review.
Measure corrections as useful behavior
Track which sections customers edit, whether the edit changes the total, checkout completion after editing, post-purchase cancellation and support contacts for order corrections. A high edit rate may reveal an upstream default or confusing product selector—not a problem with the review step itself.

Frequently asked questions
Does every checkout need a separate review page?
No. A well-structured one-page checkout can provide a clear review state before the final action.
Should the payment button remain visible while editing?
Only if it cannot submit stale data. Disable or update it while totals and eligibility are being recalculated.
What is the best success metric?
Measure completed orders with fewer cancellations and support corrections, not simply fewer clicks.
