Attributed Branded Searches: Use the Signal Without Calling It Incrementality

Updated: September 2026
Attributed Branded Searches can show whether people search for your brand after seeing a YouTube ad, but it is a leading indicator—not proof that the campaign caused incremental revenue. Use it to diagnose demand creation quickly, then validate the business effect with experiments and downstream outcomes.
What Attributed Branded Searches measures
Google describes Attributed Branded Searches, or ABS, as an always-on metric that links a video ad impression to a later branded Google search. The 2026 update adds support for AI Mode, new-searcher segmentation, Display & Video 360 availability and self-service brand mapping.
The metric is useful because branded search often appears before a purchase and sooner than long-cycle revenue. It can reveal that an awareness campaign is changing consideration even when last-click conversions remain quiet.
What the metric does not prove
An attributed search is not automatically incremental. People exposed to a campaign may already know the brand, be predisposed to buy or encounter other media. ABS also does not tell you whether the search produced a qualified lead, profitable order or retained customer.
| ABS can help answer | ABS cannot answer alone |
|---|---|
| Did exposed viewers later search for the brand? | Would those searches have happened without advertising? |
| Which campaigns generate more observed search activity? | Which campaign created the most incremental profit? |
| Is brand interest moving before sales data matures? | Whether a high cost per ABS is acceptable for the business |
A practical decision framework
Validate brand mapping first
Confirm spelling variants, product brands, parent-company names and ambiguous terms. A mapping that is too narrow misses real demand; one that is too broad can absorb searches unrelated to the advertiser.
Segment new and existing searchers
New-searcher growth is more useful for acquisition than repeated searches from existing customers. Interpret segments alongside campaign reach, frequency, audience mix and creative rotation.
Connect ABS to business outcomes
Track what happens after the search: qualified site visits, assisted conversions, CRM opportunities, purchases, contribution margin and repeat behavior. Compare these outcomes by market and campaign cohort when privacy thresholds allow.
Use causal evidence for budget decisions
Run a Brand Lift, Search Lift, geo holdout or other appropriate experiment before treating ABS as incremental. Google explicitly positions the metric as complementary to incrementality testing.
Example: two campaigns with the same conversion count
Campaign A and Campaign B each report 100 conversions. Campaign A produces substantially more attributed branded searches among new searchers, but the extra searches do not progress to qualified visits. Campaign B produces fewer searches but stronger contribution profit. ABS identifies a difference in consideration; it does not override the downstream result.
Questions to ask before scaling
- Is the brand mapping accurate and stable?
- Are new-searcher results improving or only total ABS?
- Did reach, frequency, geography or seasonality change?
- Do searchers become qualified visitors and customers?
- Does an experiment confirm lift?
- Is cost per ABS improving without sacrificing business outcomes?

How to report ABS to stakeholders
Use a three-line scorecard: attributed branded searches and cost per ABS as the early signal; qualified visits or pipeline as the intermediate result; and experimental lift or incremental profit as the decision evidence. Label each line clearly so an observed metric is not presented as a causal conclusion.
Annotate creative launches, reach changes, PR events, promotions and competitor activity. A sudden increase is more useful when the team can distinguish media effects from a broader market event. Report the metric as a trend and segment, not a standalone headline.
When to pause interpretation
Do not make a budget decision from ABS during a broken brand mapping, a major site outage, a large change in campaign reach or an incomplete reporting window. Wait until the measurement inputs are stable enough to support comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is ABS the same as Search Lift?
No. ABS is an always-on observed metric tied to ad exposure. Search Lift is an experiment designed to estimate causality by comparing exposed and control groups.
Can ABS be used for AI Mode?
Google says the 2026 improvements include support for AI Mode, subject to account availability and rollout timing.
What is the best KPI to pair with ABS?
Use qualified revenue or contribution profit, plus an incrementality test where the investment justifies it.
