Ads in Google AI Overviews: How Advertisers Should Prepare

Updated: September 2026
Ads in Google AI Overviews are not a separate campaign type. Eligible Search, Shopping, and Performance Max ads can appear within an AI-generated answer when Google detects commercial intent and the ad is relevant to both the query and the overview. Advertisers cannot target, exclude, or report on this placement separately, so preparation depends on stronger inputs and disciplined measurement.
How ads in AI Overviews work
Google says ads may appear above, below, or within AI Overviews. Ads above and below are eligible across the markets where AI Overviews are available. Ads within the overview are currently available for English-language searches in a defined group of countries, including the United States.
For an ad to appear inside the answer, it must win the auction and address both the user’s original question and the context Google generated. That creates a different matching problem from a short commercial query. A search such as “why is my pool green and how do I clean it” may reveal intent for testing supplies or cleaning equipment even though the user did not begin with a product name.
What advertisers should change
Expand intent coverage without abandoning control
Google recommends AI-powered targeting such as broad match, AI Max, Performance Max, Shopping, or Dynamic Search Ads because complex answer-seeking queries are less likely to match a narrow keyword list. Expansion should still be paired with accurate conversion values, sensible location settings, exclusions, and query reviews. Our guide to the Google AI Brief for AI Max explains how to give automation clearer business context.
Make product data answer-ready
Retailers should keep titles, descriptions, prices, promotions, shipping, returns, attributes, images, and video current. AI matching becomes less reliable when a feed omits the specifications that distinguish a product. Treat each attribute as evidence Google can use to connect an exploratory question to the right item.
Improve the post-click answer
The landing page should continue the reasoning that earned the placement. Put the relevant use case, differentiator, proof, limitations, price, and next step near the top. A generic category page may technically match while failing the visitor’s more specific question.
A practical 30-day preparation plan
- Map complex questions. Gather customer-support questions, site-search terms, sales-call objections, and long-tail search terms.
- Group by underlying job. Separate troubleshooting, comparison, compatibility, replacement, and purchase-readiness needs.
- Audit coverage. Check whether campaigns, feeds, and landing pages contain the language and evidence needed for each job.
- Protect the bidding signal. Import qualified leads, revenue, or margin where possible. Avoid optimizing equally toward weak and valuable actions.
- Monitor blended outcomes. Watch search-term quality, new-versus-returning customers, conversion lag, value, and lead quality rather than clicks alone.
The reporting limitation matters
Google currently reports ads within AI Overviews as Top Ads and does not provide placement-level segmentation. That means advertisers cannot directly isolate spend, clicks, or conversions from this experience. Use controlled campaign changes, landing-page diagnostics, CRM outcomes, and broader incrementality methods to avoid claiming a result the interface cannot prove. The AI-era measurement stack offers a framework for combining attribution with experiments and marketing mix modeling.
